The Finnish government is ready to remove old vehicles because of high carbon emissions and plans to subsidize their replacement with lower-emission models, according to Finnish state press agency Yle.
Finland’s cabinet aims to lower carbon emissions in line with European Union leaders' decision in October to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030. The government plans to make a financial offer to car owners whose vehicles have been on the road for over 11 and half years.
The pilot program is due to start in July 2015. If the cabinet approves the plan, the car owners with old cars will receive a rebate of 1,500 euros when they buy a new car. According to the Finnish government, lowering the average age of the vehicles on the roads will have both environmental and safety benefits.
According to statistics, the average car on the road in Finland is more than 10 years old.
