Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Authority is closely monitoring and taking measures against manipulation of the private electricity distribution market, the head of Turkey's energy watchdog said on Thursday.
Mustafa Yilmaz said in a press release that the watchdog prepared the necessary regulations and precautions and was also aware of potential manipulation which could be carried out by electricity distribution companies.
After customers' complaints regarding high electricity bills, some consumer associations and rights groups disclosed private distribution companies' manipulation of electricity bills such as delaying the consumers' receipt of their bills so extra charges may then be enforced, requesting extra security deposits or insisting on a replacement meter.
Yilmaz said that it is unacceptable if any manipulation has been carried out by distribution companies on electricity bills and he assured that a team in the Electricity Market Directorate of EMRA is dealing with complaints and will legally warn any accused companies of their wrongdoing.
'There is no need for our citizens to worry, EMRA has prepared the necessary preventative regulations,' Yilmaz said.
