A trio of nonprofits will develop a project to measure carbon emissions from all large power plants worldwide and render the information public, WattTime, one of the collaborators, announced on Tuesday.
WattTime is joined by financial think tank Carbon Tracker and global research organization World Resources Institute.
The project, with $1.7 million funding from Google, will use global network of satellites to collect data by observing power plants from space.
The data will hold polluting plants accountable to environmental standards and enable advanced new emissions reduction technologies, the company said.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology will use the latest image processing algorithms to detect signs of power plant emissions, WattTime said.
'AI algorithms will cross-validate multiple indicators of power plant emissions, from thermal infrared indicating heat near smoke stacks and cooling water intake, to visual spectrum recognition that a power plant is emitting smoke,' the company explained.
