Saudi Arabia and Kuwait jointly announced on Monday a new oil discovery in the Partitioned Zone, marking the first find since production operations resumed there and in the adjacent offshore area in mid-2020.
The discovery was made by Wafra Joint Operations in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, located five kilometers north of the Wafra field, according to a joint press release by the Saudi Energy Ministry and the Kuwaiti Oil Ministry.
The Wara reservoir in the North Wafra (Wara-Burgan-1) well showed a production rate exceeding 500 barrels per day. The crude oil has an API gravity of between 26 and 27 degrees.
"The discovery is regarded as highly significant, given its positive impact on both countries' standing as reliable global energy suppliers and their capabilities in the exploration and production sector," the statement read.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait signed an agreement in 2019 to divide oil production in the Partitioned Zone, which lies between the two countries.
