World’s 1st floating nuke plant to be tested in June

- A crew of 305 people will serve the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP

The world's first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) will be sent to Russia's far northwest port city of Murmansk for loading of the nuclear fuel and for several tests in June 2018, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug’s official web page announced on Thursday.

The 'Akademik Lomonosov' FNPP will provide electricity to Russia’s northernmost town of Pevek after reaching at the port of the town in June 2019, administration of the country's far east autonomous region of Chukotka said.

The FNPP which is designed to operate for about forty years, financed by Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, a subsidiary of state nuclear corporation Rosatom. The plant will replace the retiring Bilibinskaya Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently generating up to 80 percent of electric power in the isolated Chaun-Bilibinskaya grid.

The construction of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP was an initiative of the special 'Far East section' of the state program 'Development of the Nuclear Power and Industry Complex,' according to Russian Ministry for Development of Far East.

The total number of staff for the plant will be 305 people, while housing, health educational facilities will be used to provide services to the staff, according to preliminary data.

Previously, Russian Building Standards Watchdog, Glavgosexpertiza, announced that it approved the construction of the plant on Jan. 9.
