Russian Rosatom, Congo ink nuke cooperation agreement

- The deal is the first for both countries in the peaceful use of atomic energy, says Rosatom

Russian nuclear company Rosatom and the Ministry of Scientific Research and Technological Innovations of the Republic of Congo signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for peaceful uses of atomic energy, according to the Russian company on Tuesday.

The memorandum is the first document in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy signed between the two countries, the statement said.

The agreement aims at bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, including the development of nuclear infrastructure in the Republic of Congo and the development of programs aimed at higher awareness of nuclear technologies and their applications. It also covers the use of radioisotopes and radiation technologies in manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare, and education and personnel training.

The agreement also proposes looking at ways to construct a Center for Nuclear Science and Technology in the Republic of Congo with a Russian-designed research reactor at its core.
