Russian Novovoronezh II 1st reactor powers 1.01M homes

- Unit 1 of Novovoronezh II nuclear plant has generated 10 terawatt-hours of power since 2016

Russia's first VVER-1200 reactor at the Novovoronezh II nuclear power plant (NPP) produced more than 10 terawatt-hours of power since its launch in 2016, enough to power over 1.01 million homes in the Voronezh region, according to Russia's state-owned nuclear company Rosatom on Tuesday.

The World Nuclear News reported that the amount of power the NPP produced is equal to the annual electricity demand of the Voronezh region where the plant is located.

Unit 1 of Novovoronezh was connected to the national grid for the first time on August 5, 2016 and following pilot tests, was put into commercial operation on Feb. 27 last year.

The Generation III+ advanced VVER-1200 reactor is a water-to-water power unit, or pressurized water reactor.

Russia's Novovoronezh nuclear plant is a 'tween' project with Turkey's first Akkuyu nuclear power plant located in the Mersin province of southern Turkey.

Turkey's Akkuyu NPP will have four units, with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts. Russian State Nuclear Energy Agency Rosatom will build the plant.
