Russia's state atomic energy corporation Rosatom will commission the third and fourth unit of China's Xudabao nuclear power plant (NPP) by 2027-2028 and start construction of the first unit of Egypt's Dabaa NPP in the summer of 2020, according to Aleksei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, on Wednesday.
According to Russian state news agency TASS, Likhachev confirmed at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, that Rosatom will undertake the construction of the third and fourth power unit of the Xudabao NPP in China by 2027-2028 based on the Chinese partners updated plans at the project implementation stage.
Russia and China are actively collaborating for the realization of various nuclear energy projects. Currently, three VVER-1000 power units, which Russia designed and constructed, are operational at Taiwan's largest NPP facility.
The Xudabao NPP project was originally expected to comprise six CAP1000 reactors, but on June 8, Rosatom signed a deal with China National Nuclear Power to build two VVER-1200 units for the Xudabao.
Russia and Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement for Egypt's Dabaa project in November 2015. The contract stipulates that Rosatom will build four VVER-1200 reactors and supply nuclear fuel throughout the plant's entire lifetime. The first unit of the plant is set for commissioning in 2026, according to Rosatom.
Obtaining the license for the first unit of the Dabaa NPP in Egypt will be the next phase to start construction in the summer of 2020, he said.
In addition to construction in China and Egypt, the company is also conducting NPP construction in Turkey, Bangladesh, Belarus, Finland, Hungary, India, Iran and Russia.
