Romanian Cernavoda nuclear plant in automatic shut down

- Automated disconnection of reactor has no adverse impact on personnel, the population or the environment, says company CEO

Unit two of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant was automatically disconnected from the national grid on Thursday morning, Romanian nuclear power company S.N. Nuclearelectrica SA (SNN) announced.

The occurrence followed a 'dysfunction at the electric system in the classical part of the power plant, and not the nuclear part,' SNN CEO Cosmin Ghita reported in a statement.

According to the statement, specialists are investigating the cause and 'will perform the necessary repair works in compliance with the procedures specific to the nuclear industry for such situations,' the statement read.

The company also confirmed there was no connection with the power reduction of Unit 2 from Sunday, March 25, and the automated disconnection of the reactor on Thursday, March 29.

'The automated disconnection of the reactor from SEN [national grid] is provided and achieved through the protection systems in the project for such situations and represents a conservative and procedural activity, without impact on nuclear safety,' the statement read.

The automated disconnection of the reactor from the national grid and the repair works of the electric process systems 'have no adverse impact on the personnel, the population or the environment, as they are performed in compliance with the nuclear safety norms and standards,' the company stated.
