French company inks nuke dismantling deal with S. Korea

The agreement aims for cooperation between Korean KHNP and New AREVA in the cleanup and dismantling of reactors

French nuclear company New AREVA and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed an agreement to strengthen their cooperation for the dismantling of nuclear reactors, according to state-owned nuclear company on Monday.

The agreement aims at cooperation between KHNP and New AREVA in the cleanup and dismantling of reactors.

'With expertise garnered on the decommissioning and dismantling market for more than 45 years, New AREVA is ideally positioned to propose reliable and safe solutions to nuclear operators worldwide,' the statement said.

The agreement was signed by Lee Kwansup, CEO of KHNP and Arnaud Gay, New AREVA's senior vice president, in the presence of France's Ecological and Inclusive Transition Minister Nicolas Hulot and South Korea's Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy Paik Ungyu.

New AREVA transforms nuclear materials so they can be used to support the development of society, first and foremost in the field of energy, according to the company.

The group offers products, technologies and services within the entire nuclear fuel cycle, with activities encompassing mining, uranium chemistry, enrichment, used fuel recycling, logistics, dismantling and engineering.

KHNP is the largest electric power company that generates approximately 31.5 percent of the total electric power generated in Korea, according to the South Korean company's webpage.
