The construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant (NPP), Akkuyu, is fully on schedule, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko announced on Tuesday.
Grushko said that contracts have been awarded to the contractors and subcontractors as planned, Russian news agency TASS reported.
“Generally, we are satisfied with the progress made on peaceful nuclear energy with Turkish authorities,' he stated.
An intergovernmental agreement for the NPP, which will consist of four VVER-1200 power units with a total installed capacity of 4,800 megawatts, was signed between Russia and Turkey in May 2010.
Upon completion, the plant will generate about 35 billion kilowatts-hours of electricity per year, with a service life of 60 years.
On March 8, the laying of the foundation for the first reactor of the nuclear power plant was completed and works are in progress for the second unit.
