Türkiye's natural gas imports decreased by 9.79% in January compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from Türkiye's energy watchdog on Friday.
Natural gas imports in January fell to around 6.04 billion cubic meters (bcm) from approximately 6.70 bcm in the same month of 2022, Türkiye's Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.
According to EMRA data, the country imported approximately 3.21 bcm of natural gas via pipelines in January, while 2.83 million cubic meters (mcm) was purchased as LNG. This represented a 20.8% decrease in pipeline imports and a 7.21% increase in LNG imports.
Russia was the majority supplier, providing 2.14 bcm of natural gas to Türkiye, while Azerbaijan and Algeria followed with 881 mcm and 763 mcm, respectively.
Gas imports in January from Belgium, France and Norway fell by 100%, and imports from Nigeria and the US dropped by 34% and 39.1%, respectively, relative to January last year.
The country's total gas consumption in January also contracted by 11.8% to approximately 6.37 bcm compared to the same month in 2022.
Household consumption dropped by 15.3% to 2.78 bcm, and gas usage in power plants decreased by 0.83% over the same period.
The natural gas storage volume in January last year increased by 239% to around 5.12 bcm, compared to 1.51 bcm in January 2022.
