Natural gas to complement renewable sources

- Natural gas will be carrier of renewables in very long future, says vice president of Gas Infrastructure Europe

The role of natural gas will be important and gas will be carrier of the renewables in the very long future, Wim Groenendijk, vice president of Gas Infrastructure Europe, said on Friday in Zagrep, the capital of Croatia.

Speaking at the 2nd International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) Eurasian Conference, Groenendijk said that renewable-gas will enter the market in the long future.

He claimed that there will be natural gas from renewable electricity.

“You can produce gas from electricity into gas into hydrogen, by using electricity. That is renewable gas,” said Groenendijk.

'In the very long future, natural gas will be carrier of renewables.

Exemplifying that the traditional market gas will also penetrate in transport, natural gas will be fuel for ships and trucks which is a much more environmentally way, he said.

Especialy in the transportation industry, gas will be the main source of fuel, Groenendijk said adding that today the fuel used for transportation is heavy oil or diesel.

Power to gas (also power-to-gas) (often abbreviated P2G) is a technology that converts electrical power to a gas fuel.[1] When using surplus power from wind generation, the concept is sometimes called windgas. There are currently three methods in use; all use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen by means of electrolysis.

Trade of natural gas worldwide increased by around 5 percent in 2016 year-on-year, according to BP's report.

Global proved gas reserves in 2016 rose slightly by 1.2 trillion cubic meters to 186.6 trillion cubic meters.
