China's Greka starts drilling in India

- Chinese energy firm Greka has spud first well of drilling campaign for Indian company, Essar Oil, on east India

Greka Drilling Limited, an unconventional oil and gas driller in Asia, announced the spudding of the first well of the drilling campaign for Essar Oil Ltd. on the Raniganj East Block in West Bengal.

Greka stated that the well was spud by the GD75-17 rig which is currently drilling at a depth of 435 meters.

Essar Oil is operating for non-conventional energy sources in India. The primary goal in this effort is exploration for coal bed methane (CBM), an energy source that is significantly more environment-friendly than petroleum or coal.

The Essar's largest current CBM operation is at Raniganj in West Bengal. The total CBM acreage of the Raniganj CBM gas field is 500 square kilometers.

The drilling campaign is expected to last approximately 12 months.

“Following the announcement of the contract with Essar Oil, we are delighted to announce that this spud initiates a continuous one-year drilling program for five GD75 rigs on location which are dedicated to complete this work program over a twelve month period,' said Randeep S. Grewal, chairman and chief executive of Greka Drilling.

'The contract itself is important to Greka Drilling as it cements our intention to diversify the company’s client base and geographical spread into India, in addition to China.' Grewal said.
