The U.K. is investing £30 million ($38.8 million) in projects to develop smart energy approaches that will significantly lower energy system costs and emissions, the government announced on Monday.
With the funding, the country aims to create a pipeline of highly innovative, ambitious, local energy system designs, across heat, power and transport, that are investable and ready to roll out across the U.K. in the 2020s.
Any U.K.-based organizations, including industry, academia, public bodies and local communities, can apply for a share of the funding 'to develop designs for smart local energy systems that make the best use of innovative technologies including cheaper renewables, energy storage, low carbon heat and digital infrastructure,' the government said.
The competition for funding will be held from May 7 to Aug. 7, 2019.
'Smart energy systems can intelligently link energy supply, storage and use, and power heating and transport in ways that dramatically improve efficiency,' Rob Saunders, challenge director of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Program - the body overseeing the funding.
