LNG terminals key for hydrogen, says Gas Infrastructure Europe

- Gas infrastructure will be key for cleaner world, says Deputy Secretary General of GIE

Comprehensive gas infrastructure, and specifically LNG terminals, is key for a cleaner world, Roxana Caliminte, the deputy secretary-general of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) said on Tuesday.

During the Flame Energy and Gas Conference in Amsterdam, Caliminte stressed the importance of LNG terminals for the switch to green hydrogen-based energy from coal.

She said that LNG terminals could become gateways for hydrogen and hydrogen carriers using the existing gas infrastructure so no changes, additional finance, or specific policies are needed.

As the world embarks on a journey towards a zero carbon-emission global economy, she urged for a full global hydrogen strategy.

'We have to have the right international standards for renewables but no carbon gasses, including hydrogen,' she said.

GIE is a European association for gas pipelines, underground storage and LNG import terminals. It has 70 members from 26 European countries.
