Ukrainian private energy company DTEK announced Tuesday that it imported its first cargo of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) via Lithuania.
DTEK said it was delivered through its trading company, D.Trading, noting that the volume of gas imported will be sent to Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Poland and other markets in Eastern Europe after regasification.
“DTEK’s efforts to increase supplies of American LNG to central, eastern and southeastern Europe are aimed at strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and neighboring countries,” it said.
It said the volumes were imported from the Plaquemines plant in the US state of Louisiana, which were then sent to the LNG terminal in the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda.
“The vessel Gaslog Houston delivered 160,000 cubic meters of cargo – equivalent to approximately 100 million cubic meters of natural gas or 1 TWh of energy – on November 17,” it said.
DTEK said the company estimates that Ukraine needs to import 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of LNG this winter following Russian attacks on gas infrastructure and underground storage facilities.
It added that it is in talks to import additional shipments of US LNG to Europe.
It came two days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Athens, where the two countries’ gas companies signed a letter of intent on the supply of LNG from the US to Ukraine during the coming winter.
Moscow and Kyiv have frequently traded accusations about targeting each other’s energy facilities as winter approaches.
