Türkiye will boost its gasification capacity through two new investments, including plans for two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) along the Mediterranean coast, the Turkish energy and natural resources minister said on Sunday.
One of the projects will double capacity at the Dortyol FSRU in the southern province of Hatay, which is operated by state pipeline company BOTAS, Alparslan Bayraktar told reporters during a visit to the terminal.
"We are planning a new FSRU with a capacity of 28 million cubic meters right next to the existing facility," Bayraktar said, adding that engineering work is already underway. "We will double the capacity at the site through BOTAS."
Türkiye is also planning a separate FSRU along the Mediterranean coast between Gazipasa-Anamur, Bayraktar said, as part of efforts to make the country's gas infrastructure more resilient.
Bayraktar said Türkiye's total gasification capacity currently stands at 160 million cubic meters per day.
"Over the next two years, we will push forward our goal of meeting nearly half of the country's gas needs in liquefied form and will be able to receive 200 million cubic meters of gas per day by ship," he said.
Bayraktar added that Türkiye has increased investments in recent years to complement pipeline gas imports with liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered by ship.
"With these investments, we are now able to receive a significant amount of natural gas by ship. This is important both for diversifying supply and for accessing gas at more affordable and competitive prices," he said.
