The Norwegian government on Thursday announced a mandate requiring all aviation fuel sold in the country to contain 0.5 percent of advanced biofuel from 2020 in an effort to reduce emissions in the transport sector.
Advanced biofuel is biofuel made of waste and residues.
According to Ministry of Climate and Environment statement, the requirement implies that no biofuel should be used from 'problematic' raw materials such as palm oil in aviation from 2020 onwards.
'The government's goal is that by 2030, 30 percent of the airline fuel will be sustainable with a good climate effect,' the statement said.
According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, this will result in a reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions of 14,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents in the first year.
