Spanish energy company Repsol and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) agreed to promote sustainable development in at least 18 countries, Repsol announced Monday.
This global agreement is a first for the UNDP with a company from the oil and gas sector, Repsol's press release revealed.
Repsol and the UNDP's agreement is to "facilitate the advancement of sustainable development to foster collaboration in support of community development and the protection of human rights, through initiatives that promote local economic and social progress as well as respect for the environment".
"As such, the partnership will support local communities in their efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals," the press release said.
“We are committed to support countries engaged in the sustainable use of natural resources to transform their wealth into sustainable development,” Marcos Neto, director for global UNDP Istanbul International Center on Private Sector in Development, said in the press release.
Repsol's Sustainability Director Fernando Ruiz also said in the press release that they consider sustainable development to be one of Repsol's global goals, arguing the agreement with the UNDP demonstrates their high standards.
According to the press release, the collaboration between Repsol and the UNDP has an initial duration of two years and identifies four activity areas:-
- The exchange of information and analysis to identify potential collaborative projects,
- The engagement of community stakeholders in participatory dialogue to define local development priorities,
- The support for concrete projects that ensure sustainable development,
- The sharing of knowledge and experiences of how the extractive industries can support achievement of the sustainable development goals.
Currently, joint international operations are planned for the following countries: Algeria, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Guyana, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
