Large gas field discovered in Tarim Basin, China

- PetroChina’s Tarim branch discovers 418,200 cubic meters of daily gas and 21.66 million tonnes of gas condensate reserves

A huge natural gas field with estimated reserves of 115.3 billion cubic meters was discovered in Xinjiang's Tarim Basin, PetroChina, China's largest oil and gas producer, said on Thursday.

PetroChina’s Tarim branch plans to start natural gas production next month, the company's vice general manager, Tian Jun said.

After the successful drilling of test wells, the company found daily output of 418,200 cubic meters of natural gas and 21.66 million tonnes of gas condensate reserves.

The Tarim oil field currently provides natural gas to a total of 15 provincial-level regions in northern and eastern China via the country's West-to-East gas pipelines.

Furthermore, on Sunday, PetroChina announced that 740.97 billion cubic meters of proven shale gas reserves were discovered in the Changning-Weiyuan and Taiyang areas of the Sichuan Basin, marking verified reserves of 1.06 trillion cubic meters in the area.

The company plans to produce 7.7 billion cubic meters of shale gas this year and expand the output to over 10 billion cubic meters by the end of 2019.
