Türkiye breaks record in daily electricity production from renewables on April 12

Turkish energy minister says Türkiye to 'commission 3.5 GW solar and 1.5 GW of wind power plants every year for next 12 years'

Türkiye broke a new record last Friday when it generated 78.5% of its daily electricity from renewables, the Turkish energy and natural resources minister announced Tuesday.

'On April 12, we provided 78.5% of our daily electricity generation from renewable resources,” Alparslan Bayraktar said in a statement.

While hydroelectricity power plants produced the majority at 24.52%, wind power followed with 20.93%, run-of-river hydroelectricity produced 12.80%, and solar generated 11.27%, according to Alparslan Bayraktar.

Renewable energy continues to play a key role in the fight against the country’s current account deficit and climate change. The recent high production level is also consistent with ensuring supply security, reducing foreign dependency on coal and gas imports, and meeting carbon neutrality targets.

Bayraktar said, given the importance of renewables in ensuring full energy independence, that more intensive renewables investments are on the cards, with the ministry actively working to facilitate and accelerate financing in this sector.

To this end, Türkiye announced an additional capacity of 7,500 megawatts for unlicensed renewable investments at the beginning of the year.

On X, the minister announced that Türkiye would commission 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar and 1.5 GW of wind power plants every year for the next 12 years, with the goal of increasing the share of renewable energy production to 55% by 2035.

The share of renewable resources in electricity generation similarly hit record highs during the week in which Türkiye celebrated Ramadan Eid. Renewable sources generated 74.8%, or three-quarters, of the electricity produced that week.
