Siemens and the Federal Government of Nigeria signed an agreement to implement Nigeria's electrification roadmap, Siemens said in a statement on Tuesday.
The roadmap aims to address and resolve the existing challenges in the power sector and expand the capacity for the future power needs of the country, the company explained.
It detailed that Nigeria`s power system is suffering from an imbalance between power generation and consumption. Despite more than 13,000 megawatts of power generation capacity in the country, only an average of 3,400 megawatts reliably reaches consumers.
"The Roadmap has three phases. Phase 1 is focusing on essential and quick-win measures to increase the system`s end-to-end operational capacity to 7,000 megawatts. Phase 2 is targeting the remaining network failures to enable full use of existing generation and distribution capacities, bringing the systems operational capacity to 11,000 megawatts," the company said, adding that Phase 3 will develop the system up to 25,000 megawatts in the long-term.
The agreement forms a comprehensive strategy to help develop the country's energy sector and includes the rehabilitation, upgrade and expansion of transmission and distribution networks and power generation to significantly enhance Nigeria`s energy system, and create thousands of new skilled jobs.
"The goal is to secure reliable and affordable electricity supply for Nigeria," the statement concluded.
