Sectoral energy consumption over 100 M tonnes of oil eq.

- Turkey consumed 46 million tonnes of oil equivalent of energy for electricity generation

Turkey's industry and service sectors together consumed 107.26 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) of energy, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Friday.

According to the TurkStat data -- published first time after a two-year hiatus, the energy consumption in 2017 was 91.37 mtoe in industry while it is 15.90 mtoe in services sector.

Tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) is a unit of energy defined as the amount of energy released by burning one tonne of crude oil.

Manufacturing had the lion's share in total sectoral energy consumption with 42.2 percent as the electricity, gas and steam production and distribution consumed 40 percent and transportation and storage 10.2 percent.

Natural gas was the most consumed fuel in 2017, the data reveals. Total consumption of piped natural gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) was 29.60 mtoe.

The second ranking fuel of choice was hard coal with 19.64 mtoe, lignite and asphaltite with 12.72 toe.

- Final energy consumption

Final energy consumption, excluding the electricity generation and ommission, is accounted as 51.27 mtoe.

Data shows that according to sectoral distribution, manufacturing sector saw the 62 percent of final energy consumption in 2017.

'This ratio was 20.8 percent for transportation and storage while it is 3.8 percent for wholesale and retail trade sector,' data read.

- Industry and service sectors

Industry and service sectors consumed 138.80 megawatts-hour (MWh) of electricity while manufacturing had 91.87 MWh.

According to the data, 46.18 mtoe of energy was consumed for electricity generation.

With respect to the energy usage areas, 42.9 percent of energy consumption was used in electricity generation. This ratio was 33.4 percent for production of goods and services, the data revealed.

The most used fuel for electricity generation was natural gas.

'17.50 mtoe of natural gas was consumed for electricity generation. Hard coal was in the second place with 11.66 mtoe,' data showed.

TurkStat stated that the scope of the Sectoral Energy Consumption Statistics is 25,479 enterprises chosen according to the total energy purchasing with the number of employees 50 and over 50.
