India: fastest energy consumption growth by 2035

- India's energy demand will grow by 129 percent by 2035 compared to current demand, says BP's outlook

India's energy consumption will grow the fastest among all major economies by 2035, said BP's latest energy outlook.

The company's report said that as a result, India would remain import dependent despite increases in production.

India's energy demand will grow by 129 percent in 2035 compared to current demand.

The country's demand for gas will expand by 162 percent, followed by oil with 120 percent and coal by 105 percent.

The report explained that the fuel mix would evolve very slowly with fossil fuels accounting for 86 percent of demand in 2035, compared to the current 92 percent.

Also, it added that the share of coal in the fuel mix would fall from 58 percent at present to 52 percent by 2035, while the share of renewables will rise from 2 percent to 8 percent.

Coal will remain the dominant fuel produced in India with a 65 percent share of total production in 2035.

'Renewables overtakes oil as the second largest, increasing from 4 percent to 14 percent in 2035 as oil drops from 10 percent today to 3 percent by 2035,' BP said.
