Scotland's biggest and the world’s fourth largest offshore wind farm officially started operations on Monday, project partner SSE Renewables said.
The £2.5 billion Beatrice wind farm is located in the North Sea and has a capacity to generate 588 megawatts of energy, enough to power 450,000 homes per year.
With 84 turbines, the project will save around 8 million tonnes of carbon emissions over its expected 25-year lifetime operation.
Project was developed by Scottish energy firm, SSE Renewables (40%) with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (35%) and Red Rock Power Limited (25%).
'We’re incredibly proud it’s been delivered on time and under budget, even when dealing with the challenges the North Sea and deep waters bring,' said Jim Smith, managing director of SSE Renewables.
Wind energy provided 17% of the U.K.'s electricity in 2018.
