Ten new cities join Powering Past Coal Alliance

- Ten cities from Europe, Australia and US agreed to phase out coal power to tackle climate change

Powering Past Coal Alliance announced on Thursday that 10 new states, regions and cities agreed to be part of the alliance to combat climate change effectively.

According to the announcement made during Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, these new members showed growing global momentum behind the phase-out of unabated coal power generation.

'Their diversity and depth of experience reflects the increasing number of jurisdictions that share our ambition to take action to accelerate clean growth and climate protection,' the alliance said during the summit.

Confirming their membership of the Powering Past Coal Alliance are:

1- Australian Capital Territory, Australia

2- Balearic Islands, Spain

3- Connecticut, USA

4- Hawaii, USA

5- Minnesota, USA

6- New York State, USA

7- Wales, UK

8- City of Honolulu, USA

9- City of Los Angeles, USA

10- City of Rotterdam, The Netherlands

With these additional members, the Powering Past Coal Alliance now counts 74 members, including 29 national governments, 17 subnational governments and 28 businesses.

Members of the Powering Past Coal Alliance agree to keep global temperature increase well below 2 celsius, and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 celsius.
