Russia's Rosatom and Kazakhstan signed two nuclear power cooperation agreements in Vienna on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 61st International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, the Russian company announced.
The first document is a protocol to the agreement between Kazakhstan and Russia on cooperation and mutual settlements in the recycling of nuclear ammunition dated Jan. 20, 1995, according to a statement from Rosatom.
'It documents a successful completion of the largest disarmament project in human history. As a result, about 500 tons of military uranium extracted from nuclear ammunition that had been placed in Russia and Kazakhstan some time ago were transferred from the arms to the civil category,' the statement read.
The agreement was signed by Alexey Likhachev, director general of Rosatom, and Kanat Bozumbaev, Kazakhstan's energy minister on the sidelines of the conference in Vienna.
The second document is for cooperation in scientific research and development in the nuclear energy sector.
