The labor force participation rate for women in Turkey has increased to 34 percent, the country’s parliament speaker said on Thursday.

Binali Yildirim’s remarks came during a panel on women as part of the Parliamentary Speakers' Summit at the G20 held in Buenos Aires.

During his speech, Yildirim recalled that Turkey recognized the women’s participation in the labor force in 1933.

“In the last 10 years, we’ve provided opportunities to women in Turkey in order make them participate more in the workforce,” he said.

“Women participation in the workforce has increased to 34 percent from 12 percent,” Yildirim stressed.

Turkey’s goal is to make this increase to 43 percent within a 5-year period, the parliament speaker added.

Argentina took over the presidency of the G20 last year, with the forum’s main activities taking place over the course of 2018.
