Diesel prices in Germany hit a new nationwide record Tuesday as the US-Israeli war with Iran drove up global oil prices, fueling calls for government relief.
A liter of diesel rose to an average of €2.50 ($2.90), according to price data from ADAC, Germany's largest automobile association. Premium gasoline averaged about €2.29 per liter on Tuesday, while E10 gasoline averaged about €2.24.
The increase came days after the German government introduced a new rule, modeled on Austria’s system, allowing gas stations to raise prices only once a day but lower them any time.
Critics say the measure is intended to prevent rapid intraday price spikes but does little to ease pressure from global oil markets.
ADAC renewed its call Tuesday for temporary relief, urging the government to cut fuel taxes.
The motorists’ group said diesel taxes could be reduced to the European Union’s minimum rate, with a comparable cut for gasoline, potentially lowering prices by about 15 cents per liter.
It also advised drivers to compare prices using apps or tracking websites and to avoid filling up at the nearest gas station, noting that prices can vary by as much as 7 cents per liter – and often more on highways.
