BEIJING
China will scrap six million high-polluting vehicles across the country by the end of 2014 as it attempts to decrease air pollution, which plagues the country, the Chinese government announced Monday.
According to the statement, 1.2 million of the vehicles to be eliminated, which do not meet exhaust emissions standards, are in the municipalities of Beijing and Tianjin, as well as Hebei.
"Strengthening control on vehicle emissions will be a major agenda item for the country's energy savings, emissions reductions, and low-carbon development during the next two years," an action plan published by the State Council, China’s cabinet, says.
This plan foresees also that more vehicles will be scrapped during 2015, “involving up to five million units in the nation's economically developed regions, such as the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regions”.
The fast and uncontrolled industrialization of China has caused various forms of pollution and 16 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities are in China, according to a 2007 World Bank report.
