The US Interior Department released renderings of President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, showing it would surpass the Lincoln Memorial in size, across the Potomac River.
The proposal envisions a roughly 250-foot (76-meter) arch, more than twice the height of the 99-foot (30-meter) Lincoln Memorial, making it the tallest triumphal arch globally, about 30 feet taller than Mexico City’s Plaza de la Republica.
The proposed site is a traffic circle on the Virginia side of the Potomac, between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, on land technically within Washington, DC.
Plans show inscriptions reading “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All,” with a gold-colored Lady Liberty statue flanked by two eagles atop the arch and four lion statues at its base.
Trump has promoted the project in recent months, sharing design concepts and saying the arch is “for me.” He said the structure, resembling Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, would mark the country’s 250th anniversary.
In a Truth Social post Friday, Trump said his administration had “officially filed the presentation and plans” with the Commission of Fine Arts for what will be the “greatest and most beautiful triumphal arch anywhere in the world.”
