Moderna seeks US approval of COVID-19 booster shots for all adults
Moderna's booster shot has half the strength of original vaccine
ANKARA
US pharmaceutical firm Moderna announced on Wednesday it has applied with the US’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for all adults aged 18 and above.
If approved, millions of Americans will be able to get a third shot of the Moderna vaccine.
Moderna’s 50-microgram booster dose has half the strength of its original vaccine given in two shots around four weeks apart.
On Oct. 20, the FDA approved Moderna booster doses for seniors and individuals at high risk, six months after they complete their first series of shots.
Canada on Monday authorized Moderna booster shots for individuals aged 18 and older, who can be given the third jab at least six months after completion of the primary series.
Moderna also submitted an application to Health Canada on Tuesday for authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6 to 11.
Booster doses are effective to fight the coronavirus pandemic, according to experts.
The US administration announced in August that it was planning to roll out booster doses for all American adults in September.
