Israeli warplanes strike Hamas sites in Gaza Strip: Army

JERUSALEM

Israeli warplanes early Monday struck sites in the blockaded Gaza Strip belonging to Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in retaliation for two rockets launched from the strip earlier, according to Israeli army spokesmen.

Late Sunday, the Israeli army accused Hamas of firing two rockets into Israeli territory, one of which landed in an open area in Israel’s southern Eshkol region.

No casualties were reported by Israeli officials.

No Palestinian groups have claimed responsibility for the alleged rocket launches.

In July and August of last year, Israel carried out a weeks-long offensive against the Gaza Strip with the ostensible aim of halting Palestinian rocket fire from the Hamas-run coastal enclave.

Over 2,160 Palestinians were killed in the 51-day onslaught – mostly civilians – while hundreds of homes and broad swathes of infrastructure were reduced to rubble across the Gaza Strip.
