"European community" more fitting for Turkey

Britan's former foreign secretary Lord David Owen has said "European community" more fitting for Turkey

LONDON

Reporting by Asli Aral - Britan's former foreign secretary Lord David Owen has said "a European community with a single market" -- a proposal he made as an alternative to the EU amid growing British reaction to the euro crisis -- would be more fitting for Turkey rather than a single-currency European Union.

"The model I am offering befits Turkey more than a single-currency European Union. Turkey should be invited to the negotiations for a European community with a single market," Lord Owen told an interview with the Anadolu Agency in London.
Lord Owen whose e-book, Europe Restructured?, calls for a debate whether Britain should be a part of a European community with a single market and if the country should remain an EU member.
"There should a single market. I have always been against being part of a country called Europe. And I want to see Turkey as part of this single market and part of the European political and economic life not just as a partner in NATO defense," Lord Owen said.
Lord Owen said Turkey has begun to transform into a developed European country, adding, "it is not quite possible that a modern Turkey does not qualify as a member in a European community with a single market."
