Britain is committed to working with the U.S. to destroy Daesh in Iraq and Syria, Prime Minister David Cameron told U.S. TV late on Saturday night.
“We have to destroy this caliphate, whether it is in Iraq or in Syria,” Cameron told NBC’s Meet the Press. “That is a key part of defeating this terrorist scourge that we face.”
The prime minister told U.S. viewers that he wanted Britain to do more but said he would “always have to take my parliament with me.”
Lawmakers voted against military action in Syria two years ago, putting a block on a government proposal to join U.S.-led air strikes against Daesh in Syria, although MPs did approve strikes against the group in Iraq.
Cameron added: "We're talking and discussing at the moment, including with the opposition parties in Britain, what more we can do. But be in no doubt, we're committed to working with you to destroy the caliphate in both countries."
On Monday, Cameron is expected to announce a new strategy for warning young British Muslims of the dangers of embracing Daesh, British media reported.
Cameron will tell Britons tempted to join the group that they would be used as “cannon fodder” by the extremists.
“If you are a boy, they will brainwash you, strap bombs to your body and blow you up,” he is due to say. “If you are a girl, they will enslave and abuse you.”
He will add: “This isn't a pioneering movement, it is vicious, brutal, fundamentally abhorrent."
More than 700 Britons have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join extremist groups and hundreds have returned to the U.K., according to counter-terrorism police.
