Boko Haram killed 11 of its members in northeast Nigeria on Friday for attempting to defect from the militant group, according to two local sources.

Hassan Baba, a resident of Miringa village, the scene of the attack, confirmed the incident to Anadolu Agency.

"Eleven Boko Haram members who ran to their relatives in Miringa village were killed today. They were slaughtered in the presence of their family members with a warning by Boko Haram militants that similar treatment awaits other 'traitors,'" Baba told Anadolu Agency.

Jubrin Gunda, spokesman of a local vigilante network, also corroborated Baba's account.

"Our network in Miringa confirmed to us that 11 Boko Haram defectors were killed in the presence of their family members. They also reported the burning down of their family homes," Gunda told Anadolu Agency.
