Report: Violence kills almost 5,000 Iraqis over past year

BAGHDAD

A report released Wednesday by the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights said that 4,722 people have been killed in violence and explosions in 12 Iraqi provinces since June 2014.

According to the report, 28,575 people were also injured between June 2014 and June 2015.

The report said that the number of internally displaced families reached 493,990 within the same period, according to data from the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement.

The report’s list of casualties did not include Nineveh, Saladin and Anbar provinces or the northern Iraqi Kurdish provinces of Dahuq, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah due to the presence of Daesh or a lack of human rights ministry bureaus.

Iraq has been suffering from a security vacuum since June last year, after Daesh overran the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, declaring it part of its self-styled “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria.
