BELGRADE, Serbia

Nationalist Vojislav Seselj was reelected as chairman of his Serbian Radical Party in a congress held in the Serbian capital Belgrade on Saturday.

Seselj was the only candidate to run for chairmanship.

He delivered a speech following the election and said that a “rational” alternative before Serbia was integration with Russia. He dismissed seeking close relations with the EU.

"We want to enter the Eurosian Union and our fate depends on Russia's fate," said Seselj.

Seselj is the founder of the Serbian Radical Party. He is alleged to have recruited paramilitary groups and incited them to commit atrocities during the 1990s Balkans war.

Seselji is still under trial at the Hague Tribunal over charges of "committing war crimes and crimes against humanity" and was released temporarily as he was suffering from cancer.

He faces three indictments of crimes against humanity plus charges of murder, torture and cruel treatment.

The charges are linked to crimes against non-Serbs in Croatia, Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period from 1991 to 1993.
