SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Serbian police have arrested 15 people suspected of smuggling more than 200 migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan into the European Union, officials said Monday.

The 15 people were arrested by police in cooperation with the country's Security Information Agency, or BIA, the Serbian Interior Ministry announced Monday

They are suspected of trafficking migrants over the Bulgarian border into Serbia and then leading them into Hungary.

While Bulgaria is an EU member state, it is not part of the borderless zone known as Schengen, unlike Hungary.

Serbian police said that the group charged each migrant 1,000 euros ($1.084) for the trip.

Serbia is often used as a corridor by migrants, generally from Asia and Africa, to reach EU countries.
