Eleven people have gone on trial in Spain on charges of recruiting militants for terrorist organization Daesh.

The case, which opened in the Audiencia Nacional (National Court) on Thursday, is the first trial to be held in Spain related to Daesh.

The case's prosecutor has called for jail terms of between 10 and 12 years for the 11 defendants.

Defendants and brothers Ismail and Marquitos Abdullatif Al Lal and Karin Abdusselam Muhammed are accused of sending people to Syria and Iraq to join Daesh.

It is also claimed they led a group which sent 14 people to Syria in 2012 and 2013. Eight were killed while one returned to Spain.

The defendants have denied the allegations.

The group is alleged to have operated in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta.
