At least seven dead bodies have been recovered on Friday from the site where a fishing boat capsized off the Bangladeshi coast.

The local Kutubdia Police Station's officer-in-charge Aungsa Thoyai Marma said 43 people have been rescued since the boat sank on Thursday but the number of people still missing is unknown.

He said three brokers who were smuggling the passengers, who were undocumented migrants, to Malaysia have been arrested.

The coast guard has since lifted the vessel from the water.

The police have not identified how many are missing but early reports from passengers said more than 100 people may have been on the boat.

Boats carrying migrants seeking work in Malaysia and Thailand are frequently stopped by Bangladesh authorities, including in November when 600 were stopped in the Bay of Bengal.
