Lebanon charges ex-wife of ISIL leader with 'terrorism'

BEIRUT

Lebanon's military prosecutor on Tuesday charged an ex-wife of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant group's top leader, with terrorism, a judicial source has said.

"The military prosecutor has charged Saja al-Dulaimi and her Palestinian husband with terrorism," the source told The Anadolu Agency.

The prosecutor, meanwhile, ordered the release of Alaa Oqaily, the wife of a senior ISIL leader, the source said.

Al-Dulaimi and a son of al-Baghdadi had been detained at a border crossing with Syria last month.

But the Iraqi Interior Ministry denied last week that al-Dulaimi was a wife of the ISIL leader.

The Lebanese army has recently reinforced its forces on the border with Syria following deadly clashes with militants this summer in its border town of Arsal, during which several soldiers were killed and injured. Several troops have also been captured by the militants.

Over the past several weeks, the ISIL has announced the execution of two of the ten Lebanese troops it is holding. The Nusra Front, meanwhile, has announced the execution of two of the 18 Lebanese troops it had captured.

The two militant groups demand the withdrawal from Syria of fighters from Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah group who for the past two years have been openly fighting alongside Syrian regime forces.

The ISIL has recently seized vast swathes of territory in both Iraq and Syria.
