Serbs mourn basketball fan stabbed to death in Istanbul

BELGRADE, Serbia

More than 1,000 people have paid tribute to Serbian basketball fan Marko Ivkovic who died after being stabbed in the chest ahead of a basketball match between Serbia's Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) and Turkey's Galatasaray LIV.

Serbian security forces were deployed heavily throughout Belgrade on Monday and media barred as the remains of 25-year-old Ivkovic were laid to rest in the Nova Bezanijska cemetery in New Belgrade.

The body of Ivkovic arrived in Belgrade on Saturday night after being transported by air from Turkey.

Ivkovic was stabbed in the chest outside the Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul after violence broke out between rival fans when Red Star supporters allegedly arrived at the venue without tickets for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague match.
