The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has ended.

The organization said in a statement on Friday: "The Democratic Republic of Congo is now considered free of Ebola transmission."

The outbreak in the DRC was the seventh incident of Ebola in the DRC since 1976 and is unrelated to the strain affecting the west of the continent where more than 5,400 people have died.

No cases have been detected for two incubation periods since the last person thought to have the disease tested negative twice and was discharged from hospital, the statement read.

The end of an Ebola virus disease outbreak in a country can be declared once 42 days, which represents twice the maximum incubation period for Ebola, have passed and no new cases have been detected, according to the health organization.

A total of 66 people were infected with Ebola virus in the DRC since Aug.24.
