A suicide bomber blew herself up at a college of education in Kontagora, a major town on the southern bank of the Kontagora River in Niger State, killing herself and at least one student.

"The lone suicide bomber, a female, died and injured three others when she detonated the bomb," Ibrahim Gambari, a police spokesman for Niger State, told Anadolu Agency by phone.

"Anti-bomb experts have been deployed to the scene," he added.

Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), meanwhile, confirmed that one of the injured students had died.

"From what we saw here, it was only the suicide bomber that died on the spot," Slaku Lugard, a NEMA official at the scene of the bombing, told AA by phone.

He said one student who had been wounded in the blast had since succumbed to her injuries.

"When they were rushing her to hospital, she gave up. She died," Lugard told AA.

"And there is one other beggar, who we heard had been begging around the place – she is injured, but not dead," he added.

"The other few people that were injured have been taken away by relatives," the official asserted. "The only fatal one was the girl who died and then the beggar."

Kontagora is the town in which the Nigerian Army's counterinsurgency training unit is located.

The blast came only two days after a suicide bomber killed at least 47 people, mostly schoolchildren, in the northeastern town of Potiskum in Nigeria's Yobe State.
