PARIS

France will struggle alongside the U.S. in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or the ISIL, in Iraq and Syria, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday.

Fabius made the remarks at a joint press conference with Retired Gen. John Allen, who is a special envoy to the U.S.-led coalition against the ISIL.

"The ISIL threatens all countries in the region and also us," the French minister said.

Fabius added that the U.S. and France would continue to struggle against the militant group in Iraq and Syria.

Gen. Allen said France provided both military and diplomatic support against the ISIL.

The U.S. is leading an international coalition, including France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, against the ISIL and has launched scores of air strikes on the terror group in Iraq and Syria.

The ISIL controls large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq. On June 10, it shocked the world when it seized control of Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul.

According to the UN, thousands of people have been killed and millions others have been displaced because of the ISIL-led insurgency in the region.
