Security forces claim killing 45 ISIL militants in Iraq

AL-ANBAR, Iraq

At least 30 militants were killed in clashes with Iraqi security forces and 15 others were killed in airstrikes in Iraq, military sources said Sunday.

Security forces in Iraq are battling with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or the ISIL, militants who are already in control of large swathes of territory in the country and beyond in Syria. All the militants killed Sunday were said to be affiliated with the ISIL.

Rashid Faleh, commander of the Iraqi army’s Anbar operations in western Iraq, told Anadolu Agency that around 30 ISIL militants were killed in western Ramadi in clashes.

At least 15 other ISIL fighters were killed in U.S.-led coalition forces airstrikes in Ramadi, Brigadier General Ziya Kazim said.

The ISIL militants have captured several cities of Iraq, including the country’s second-largest city Mosul, which was seized last June.

According to the U.N., at least 24,015 civilians have been killed or injured in Iraq during the first eight months of 2014.

The ISIL violence has forced an estimated 1.2 million Iraqis, including Turkmen, Arabs, Christians and Ezidis, to flee their homes.
