Iraqi army kills 9 ISIL militants in Iraq's Saladin

AL-ANBAR/ SALADIN, Iraq

Nine militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were killed in Iraqi army attacks on Friday, Iraqi security officials said.

The ISIL base near the Beyci Refinery in the northern Saladin province was destroyed as well, Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saidi, the commander of Iraqi army forces in Saladin, announced.

Meanwhile, Al-Anbar City Council President Sabah Kerhut warned that about 200 villages have been besieged by ISIL militants for five days in the Anbar province.

Fierce battles have been raging between Iraqi government forces and ISIL, as well as between Kurdish peshmerga forces and ISIL, since mid-June when the militant group seized control of Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq.

An international U.S-led coalition is currently staging airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.
