A Thai court has sentenced to death a former railway employee who sparked outrage in Thailand by raping a 13-year-old girl on an overnight train to Bangkok, killing her, and then throwing her body out of a window.
Local reports said that Wanchai Sangkhao, 22, was convicted of murder and concealing the body to hide the cause of death on Tuesday and also given a nine-year prison sentence for rape.
In response to the outcry that followed the incident, the country's military leaders removed State Railway of Thailand Governor Prapat Chongsanguan from his post and implemented women-only carriages.
Sangkhao had been employed by to make beds in "sleeper-car" trains when the July 8 incident happened.
Police had said that he was drunk and on drugs when he carried out the attack.
The route the girl was killed on - from her home in southern Thailand to the capital - is popular among backpackers traveling from southern islands and beach resorts.
